Backcountry Skier Caught in Avalanche Just North of Bridger Bowl, MT

A backcountry skier was caught in an avalanche last Saturday, November 29, in the North Bridgers near Bozeman, Montana. While taking advantage of a the still open access road to Fairy Lake, a popular summer destination, a pair of skiers ran into dangerous avalanche conditions. The report stated that there was a foot of fresh snow with isolated spots receiving a foot and a half or more.

The pair were below Pomp Peak just a few miles north of Bridger Bowl when a slab released and carried one of the skiers down the mountain roughly 250 feet. Fortunately, the one caught in the avalanche was wearing an airbag that was able to help them from being submerged into the sliding snowpack.

On the other side of Bozeman in the Galatin Range by Hyalite Reservoir, another skier reported an avalanche the same day. With more snow and inconsistent temperatures being forecasted across Montana over the next week, this is a good reminder to be cautious in the backcountry. Until the snowpack can settle and the temperatures get colder, it’s best not to take too many risks and stick to areas with slopes less than 30 degrees.

For those who don’t want to earn their laps via hiking, Bridger Bowl is scheduled to open on December 12. Most people traveling to Bozeman to ski nearby Big Sky, but Bridger Bowl is a fantastic ski area that should also be explored. Though it’s not as flashy or big, it punches well above its weight, offering a decent size and variety of terrain.

Bridger Bowl features terrain for everyone from novice skiers to adrenaline junkies. It’s even well set up with terrain becoming more difficult as you move up the mountain. Bridger Bowl is also blessed with some of the coldest and driest snow in the country, earning the legendary nickname “cold smoke.” If you’re interested in visiting check out the resort’s website.
